The
coat, cape, hat and leggings are made from a vintage wool
dress from the 1870's worn by a lady named Katie Terrell.
When I bought the vintage garment from a local vintage clothing
shop, it had been partially ripped apart so I don't know
what the original dress looked like. The owner of the vintage
clothing shop had been given the history of this garment
and this is what she told me about it...
The
garment was possibly made for Katie by her mother. Katie
was born
December 12,1856 and raised in Kankakee, Illinois. On November
27, 1883 she married Mr. Tillotson, a photographer who had
a shop in Chicago for some time. Tillotson photographed
well-known theater performers of the day such as Lillian
Russell. Katie and her husband had no children and at some
point in their marriage moved to Indianapolis, Indiana.
Katie was a tall, slight woman weighing 85 pounds. The clothing
in her estate was in especially excellent condition.
The
coat buttons were not original to the vintage garment. They
had been removed. I used buttons that I found at another
vintage clothing shop. I beaded the medallion on the dress
with a string of vintage beads.
